Understanding Diabetes & Your Vision
Diabetes can cause retinal damage and even permanent vision loss in patients who have high or uncontrolled blood sugar. Diabetes is a health condition that affects how the body uses glucose (sugar).
Our optometrists can detect signs of diabetes early with comprehensive eye exams. Because diabetes increases a person’s risk of developing certain eye conditions and diseases, it’s critical that anyone with this condition schedules and attends yearly eye exams.
Protect your health and preserve your vision. Contact us today to schedule your next eye exam.
What Makes a Diabetic Eye Exam Different Than a Regular Eye Exam?
Diabetes poses a threat to the delicate internal structures of your eyes. Unlike a regular eye exam, diabetic eye exams are specially designed to help manage and address issues in your visual system caused by diabetes.
During a diabetic eye exam, we use imaging techniques to evaluate the health of your eyes from the inside out, such as:
Diabetic Eye Conditions
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is an eye condition that can develop as a result of heightened blood sugar levels.
This condition damages blood vessels in the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (your retina). Anyone with type 1 or 2 diabetes can develop diabetic retinopathy. The signs and symptoms of diabetic retinopathy can include:
- Floaters
- Blurred vision
- Fluctuating vision
- Dark/empty areas in your vision
- Vision loss
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss in people with diabetes.
Diabetic Macular Edema
Diabetic macular edema (DME) usually develops as a result of untreated diabetic retinopathy and is characterized by extra fluid in the macula. DME is usually caused by poor blood sugar control.
Other Eye Health Issues Associated with Diabetes
Diabetes can put you at risk of developing:
- Cataracts
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Glaucoma
- Dry eye
