What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is an increasingly common eye condition that affects the eye’s ability to produce sufficient, quality tears. The glands involved in tear production either fail to produce enough tears or produce tears of poor quality.

Understanding Your Tears

The tear film has three layers; aqueous fluid, mucus, and fatty oils. The aqueous (water) layer hydrates the eyes, the mucus layer helps spread your tears across the eye, and the oil layer prevents your tears from evaporating.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) affects 85% of all dry eye patients. MGD occurs when the meibomian glands become clogged, reducing the amount of oil in your tears. MGD can lead to dry eye and treatments like IPL are designed to treat MGD.

Signs and symptoms, which usually affect both eyes, may include:

  • Redness
  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Blurred vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Eye fatigue
  • Sudden excess of tears
  • Stringy discharge

Our Dry Eye Treatment Methods

Meibography

Meibography is a specialized imaging process designed to diagnose symptoms of dry eye. With meibography, your optometrist can test and analyze the effectiveness of your meibomian glands to determine the cause of your dry eye.

RESTASIS prescription eye drops can alleviate symptoms of dry eye caused by inflammation. RESTASIS work to increase the eyes’ natural tear production with time and consistent use. One study showed patients using RESTASIS saw an increase in tear production at 6 months.

Xiidra medicated eye drops are designed to reduce inflammation around and within the eyes. In clinical studies, Xiidra was shown to reduce dry eye symptoms. These drops may be more effective at providing lasting relief from eye dryness than regular eye drops.
