Don’t Let Your Devices Drain You
Many people are guilty of spending too much time on their devices.
Whether we’re scrolling through social media or working overtime on a big report, devices are just a part of our lives. You don’t have to struggle with digital eye strain and you don’t have to give up your devices.

What Is Digital Eye Strain?
Digital eye strain can result from spending long hours in front of a digital screen without breaks. Intense focus on a digital screen can make your eyes work harder when you are trying to maintain a clear image of the screen.
The average American worker spends 7 hours a day on the computer. Anyone who uses a device with an LED screen could experience symptoms of digital eye strain (laptop, smartphone, tablet, etc.).
How to Avoid Digital Eye Strain
The 20-20-20 Rule
The 20-20-20 rule says that every 20 minutes, look away from your screen for 20 seconds at something 20 feet away. This gives your eyes a chance to relax and reminds you to blink.
Office Ergonomics
Setting up an eye-friendly workstation can help reduce your digital eye strain symptoms and promote overall wellness.
Here are a few tips to make your office setup more user-friendly:
- Set your monitor up just below eye level at an arm’s length from your face
- Lower the brightness of your screen so it’s not brighter than the light in your room or office
- Adjust your chair so your feet are flat on the ground & your arms aren’t too elevated
- Remind yourself to blink regularly throughout the day
- Try to avoid excessive “near work” (holding materials or devices close to your face)
