What Diseases Can an Eye Exam Detect?

During your regular eye exam, we look for a number of common eye conditions and diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Cataracts

Cataracts occur in the natural, clear lens of your eye. While cataracts shouldn’t be painful, having cataracts can cause hazy, cloudy patches in your vision. This can make reading, driving, or seeing your loved ones’ faces difficult.

Cataracts can be treated with surgery.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that are usually characterized by high pressure within the eye, leading to damage of the optic nerve. Glaucoma usually develops slowly and without symptoms. Vision lost to glaucoma can’t be recovered.

We use diagnostic technology, like non-contact tonometry (NCT), to detect signs of glaucoma early and begin treatment to preserve your vision.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease that develops over time and affects a patient’s central vision. AMD can make perceiving fine details difficult and can result in permanent partial vision loss.

AMD may have no signs or symptoms in its early stages, making it crucial to go for regular eye exams to protect your vision.
