See More of Your Eye Health with optomap Retinal Imaging
When it comes to your vision, early detection is everything. That’s why Great Hills Eye Care uses optomap retinal imaging, a fast, noninvasive technology that lets us see a wide, detailed view of the back of your eye without dilating drops.

The optomap takes a panoramic, 200-degree image of your retina in less than a second. This helps us detect signs of eye disease and systemic conditions before symptoms appear.

With and Without optomap
Traditional methods show only a small portion of the retina. The optomap lets us see up to 5 times more, helping our doctors protect your sight through early diagnosis and monitoring.

How optomap Works
During your exam, you’ll simply look into the scanner for a quick flash of light. There’s no discomfort, no drops, and no side effects.
Your doctor will review your retinal images with you right away so you can see exactly what we see.

optomap Retinal Imaging: Frequently Asked Questions
What is retinal imaging?
Retinal imaging involves using an advanced laser scan or camera to capture an image of your retina, allowing our doctors to more easily diagnose potential eye diseases. It is designed to be fast and comfortable and does not require the eyes to be dilated, allowing us to provide convenient and comprehensive eye care.
We use optomap retinal imaging in our practice, and our doctors recommend that this procedure be performed annually for all our patients.
Is retinal imaging required?
Our doctors believe that this is the most comprehensive screening tool available for our patients and recommend that it be performed on an annual basis for all patients.
It helps us uncover early signs of several eye diseases and conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal disease, diabetes, and hypertension. If you are under the care of another eye doctor, such as a retinal specialist, or prefer to opt out of this test, you may do this by completing a short waiver when you arrive for your exam.
I had retinal imaging done last year. Do I really need to do it again?
Retinal imaging should be considered part of your annual comprehensive eye exam. Retinal health can change over time, and many conditions may develop or progress without noticeable symptoms. This image becomes part of your permanent medical record, enabling us to view more of your retina, measure aspects of your eye, and magnify some of the finer details.
By repeating the imaging this year, we can track any changes, even subtle ones, and identify potential issues early. This is particularly important because conditions like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, or macular degeneration can evolve gradually.
Does my young child need retinal imaging?
Not only is retinal imaging completely safe and easy for children, but it is strongly recommended, as many eye problems can begin developing at an early age. It’s a quick and painless way to help keep your child’s eye health on track with no side effects.
How does it work? Is it safe?
Retinal imaging is painless, noninvasive and does not involve any radiation.
optomap retinal imaging uses advanced scanning laser technology to create a panoramic, digital, high-resolution, 200-degree view of the retina. With over 40 million images taken, no side effects have been reported.
Our Gold Standard for Every Patient
At Great Hills Eye Care, your vision and eye health come first. Optomap retinal imaging is performed on all patients as part of their annual exam because it provides a wider, more detailed view of the retina than traditional methods.
This screening helps our doctors detect early signs of disease, monitor changes over time, and protect your sight for the future. It is fast, comfortable, and an important part of maintaining lifelong eye health.
