Can Allergies Affect One Eye?

You wake up with a single scratchy, watery, and red eye. It feels just like your usual seasonal allergies, but the strange part is that your other eye feels perfectly fine. This can be confusing, and our team at Great Hills Eye Care knows it can leave you wondering what is really going on with your vision.

While allergies usually affect both eyes, it’s possible for allergies to occur in a single eye, and this often happens when an allergen comes into direct contact with that eye. These symptoms could also be due to other issues, like dry eye, so it’s a good idea to schedule an eye exam so a professional can get you on the right path to relief.

Why a Single Eye Might Feel Scratchy and Irritated

It may seem odd for allergies to play favorites, but a few simple reasons can explain why 1 eye might be getting all of the symptoms. Most of the time, it comes down to direct exposure to an irritant.

Direct Contact with Allergens

If you touch something you’re allergic to, like pet dander or seasonal pollen, and then rub only 1 of your eyes, you can set off a reaction in just that eye. The contact prompts your eye to release histamines, which leads to the familiar itchiness, redness, and swelling associated with allergic conjunctivitis.

A Blocked Tear Duct

Your tear ducts help drain tears, dust, and other irritants from your eyes. If a tear duct becomes blocked, tears may not drain properly, which can lead to irritation or excessive watering in that eye.

Common Symptoms

When an allergy strikes just 1 eye, the symptoms are usually the same as a typical eye allergy reaction, the only difference being that they’re only on a single side. You may notice:

  • An intense, persistent itch
  • The white part of your eye looks red or pink
  • Watery discharge or excessive tearing
  • A gritty feeling, like sand is in your eye
  • A puffy or swollen eyelid

What Else Could It Be?

Sometimes, what looks like an allergy might be another eye condition. Because symptoms can overlap, it’s helpful to know what else could cause irritation in a single eye, especially because different problems require different treatment. An eye doctor’s diagnosis is a great way to get the right relief for your symptoms.

Dry Eye

Dry eye can happen when your eyes either don’t produce enough tears to stay lubricated or the tears you do produce aren’t of the right quality. This condition can sometimes affect 1 eye more than the other, causing redness and a scratchy sensation. An eye doctor can determine if your symptoms point to this condition and may suggest dry eye therapies for relief.

Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)

Pink eye is an inflammation of the clear tissue covering the white part of your eye. While allergies can be a factor, so can bacteria and viruses. Viral or bacterial pink eye is contagious and often starts in 1 eye before it moves to the other.

A Foreign Object

An eyelash, dust, or another tiny particle can get stuck in your eye and cause significant irritation, redness, and watering. Because it’s something stuck in the eye, the symptoms will only appear in that eye. Many times, your eye will solve this problem on its own, but if you don’t notice your symptoms improving or you experience significant eye pain, it’s a good idea to seek immediate attention.

How to Find Relief for Your Eye

If you’re dealing with a red, scratchy eye, a few simple steps can help you feel more comfortable. Though at-home care can bring you some temporary relief, symptoms that don’t go away are usually a sign that it’s time to get a professional opinion.

At-Home Care Tips

A cool compress can soothe itching and reduce swelling. Over-the-counter artificial tears can help by flushing out any allergens that may be lingering in your eye. Most importantly, try not to rub your eye, as that can make the irritation worse.

Get a Clear Diagnosis for Your Eye Discomfort

When eye irritation strikes, you want answers quickly. A comprehensive eye exam can help determine the reasons for your discomfort, whether it’s allergies, dry eye, or something else. With a clear diagnosis, you can get the right care to help your eyes feel better fast.
