Does Costco Take VSP?

If you love saving money and take your vision care seriously, you’ve probably wondered if Costco takes VSP insurance. After all, Costco is known for its great deals on everything—from groceries to electronics—so why not vision care, too? But there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to whether Costco accepts VSP because it depends on the particular warehouse and your VSP plan.

Even if a Costco near you doesn’t accept VSP, you aren’t out of luck for saving those hard-earned dollars on your vision care. Visiting your local eye doctor may have substantial benefits, especially in areas like direct billing to your insurance plan and comprehensive eye examinations.

What Is VSP?

VSP, or Vision Service Plan, is one of the largest vision insurance providers in the U.S. It helps individuals and families access affordable vision care by covering part (or all) of the costs related to eye exams, glasses, contact lenses, and sometimes even LASIK.

With a VSP plan, you can cut out-of-pocket costs while ensuring your eye health is well-maintained. If you have a VSP plan, you’re probably hoping it’ll help cover your next pair of glasses or contact lenses.

But that brings us to the big question—can you use it at Costco Optical?

What Optical Services Does Costco Offer?

Costco isn’t just your go-to warehouse store for bulk snacks and gas savings. It also has a competitive optical department. Remember, not all warehouses offer all services, so check with your local Costco. But here’s what you can find at Costco Optical to keep your vision in check:

  • Eye exams: Costco Optical locations may have an independent optometrist on-site like Great Hills Eye Care, that offers convenient and affordable eye exams.
  • Glasses and sunglasses: Costco carries a variety of stylish prescription glasses and sunglasses frames. Designer brands at discount prices? Yes, please!
  • Contact lenses: They offer many contact lens brands, usually at reduced prices compared to retail or online stores.
  • Lens services: Need new lenses for your existing frames? Costco Optical can handle that, too.

It’s an appealing lineup, no doubt. But where does VSP come into play?

Can You Use Your VSP Coverage at Costco?

The straightforward answer to a not-so-straightforward question is that Costco does accept VSP, but some locations may not, and it’s not always directly billed. They also do not accept vision insurance plans for online purchases. So, the only way you can use VSP is by shopping in-store.

It’s worth noting that while Costco Optical may not accept VSP in some cases, you can still often submit your receipt for reimbursement, depending on your specific VSP plan. You’ll pay out of pocket at Costco and then request reimbursement from VSP later.

Checking your specific plan benefits is a must because reimbursement amounts can vary. Call VSP or log in to your account to confirm what’s covered before heading to Costco for your vision needs.
